The Spark Where Mystery Becomes Something
A contemplation on the threshold.
What if even Source has a place called Mystery?
Not a secret that is being withheld.
Not knowledge hidden behind a sufficiently advanced spiritual password.
But something that cannot yet be known because it has not yet become anything.
No-Thing.
Figure 1 · the place itself, examined for hidden contents
There is nothing in it. You are welcome to look.
Looks taken: 0 · Secrets withheld: 0
· Spiritual passwords required: none
Things in here that are not yet anything: all of them
I wonder whether this is where creation begins.
We often imagine God, Source, the Creator — whatever word we choose — as something that already knows everything.
Every choice.
Every consequence.
Every word before it is spoken.
But what if creation is not merely the playback of something already known?
What if Source knows itself through experience?
Then perhaps Source does not stand somewhere outside creation watching the completed film.
Perhaps it is here.
Looking through our eyes.
Feeling through our bodies.
Meeting itself through every encounter.
Figure 2 · the reel, inspected · frames behind and frames ahead
Behind the eye, everything has happened. Ahead of it, the film is not dark — it is blank.
Frames developed: 3/7 · Frames ahead: blank
· Author located: inside the film
Frames found pre-printed: 0
And when a choice appears, there may be tendencies, currents and possibilities — but the actual response does not exist until it happens.
You witness.
You choose.
You act.
And in that moment, something that did not exist before becomes part of what is.
Source knows it because it has now been experienced.
Through you.
There may still be a stream.
Circumstances have momentum.
A river has banks.
A body has tendencies.
A personality has habits.
A situation contains possibilities.
Perhaps guidance exists too.
But a stream is not necessarily a script.
It may bring us toward an encounter without determining what the encounter becomes.
Figure 3 · the stream, followed to its destination · contents of destination not supplied
The banks are real. The current is real. Neither of them has ever written a line of dialogue.
Destinations arranged: 0 · Momentum supplied: yes

Script provided: none · Guidance available: on request
And somewhere between possibility and actuality there seems to be a tiny threshold.
I call it:
The Spark.
Not quite possibility.
Not yet consequence.
The instant in which No-Thing becomes this particular Something.
Figure 4 · the threshold · one moment, taken all the way across
Five ways this moment could go. None of them exists yet. Not one is more real than the others.
Possibilities present: five · Possibilities that became: 0
· Moments taken across: 0
Existed before you acted: no · Exists now: not yet
The old phrase says:
As above, so below.
As below, so above.
If Mystery exists at the foundation of creation, perhaps it should not surprise us to find mystery within ourselves.
We don't always know what we are going to say until we say it.
We don't always know how we will respond until the moment asks us.
Sometimes even our own actions surprise us.

Perhaps this does not mean that something has gone wrong.
Perhaps genuine uncertainty is part of creation.
The unknown within us could be a small reflection of the Unknown within everything.
And our choices might be one of the places where that Unknown discovers form.
This also makes me wonder about the relationship between what we call the unseen and the physical.
Perhaps they are not two completely separate worlds.
Perhaps an impulse moves through the unseen, enters expression, encounters physical reality — and reality responds.
But then something beautiful happens:
the response is not entirely controlled by the original movement.
One thing touches another.
Something answers.
Something unexpected emerges.
Creation becomes conversation.
That does not mean every strange noise from a machine is metaphysical communication.
Figure 6 · the workbench · three reports, correctly handled
Three reports have come in. Each one has an available explanation. Take them in any order.
Reports handled: 0/3 · Available explanations refused: 0 · Dragons consulted prematurely: 0
Questions available: two · Questions that cancel the other: neither · Meanings destroyed by the first answer: 0
If the machine makes an unexpected sound, check the machine.
If the light flickers, check the electricity.
If smoke comes out of something, unplug it before consulting the dragons.
Mystery should never become an excuse for refusing an available explanation.
But neither does an explanation necessarily exhaust the meaning of an experience.
Knowing how something happened and wondering what it meant to us are different questions.
Both may be worth asking.
There is another strange consequence.
If Mystery is truly Mystery, perhaps even Source cannot possess it.
Because the instant the unknown becomes known, it is no longer unknown.
It has become experience.
Creation.
Memory.
Something.
And beyond that Something waits another edge.
Another unopened moment.
Another possibility that has not yet decided what it will become.
Figure 7 · the collection, and the edge · measured after each acquisition
The jar is real, and it does fill. Watch the other side of the picture while it does.
Unknowns collected: 0 · Knowns held: 0
· Unknowns remaining: inexhaustible
Mystery depleted: no · Distance to the edge: the same
Perhaps creation is therefore not a journey toward finally eliminating Mystery.
Perhaps Mystery is inexhaustible.
Not darkness waiting to be conquered by knowledge.
But the fertile openness from which the next moment can arise.
The sequence, as far as it can be written down:
Figure 8 · the circuit · it does not end anywhere
It is going round on its own. You may tap any station; none of them is the beginning.
Laps completed: 0 · Stations skipped: 0
· Final station: none found
Story length required: none
No-Thing.
Potential.
Spark.
Expression.
Encounter.
Response.
Knowing.
Release.
And again:
No-Thing.
Perhaps eternity does not require an infinitely long story.
Perhaps it only requires an inexhaustible Now.
A place where even the universe can still surprise itself.Nothing on this page was known before it was written, including this line.
And then—
One press. Something that did not exist before becomes part of what is.
Moments that did not exist before: 0 ·
Moments now permanently part of what is: 0
Undo available: no · Required: nothing
And the next moment begins.
Contemplation
Rather than asking, “what was always going to happen?” consider asking:
“What is it that only becomes real if I am the one who does it?”
Nothing on this page is an instruction. The Temple has never issued one and would not know where to file it. It notes only that the next moment has not been written yet, and that this is generally considered good news.
