Beliefs as Windows

The sky has not changed. Only the frame through which it is observed.

There is a curious paradox.

Each one rests on the one before it. Remove the first and the last quietly goes with it.

Perhaps this is why consciousness adopts beliefs.

Not because it has forgotten the truth,
but because it wishes to experience it from a particular angle.

A belief is not necessarily a prison. It is a window.

Figure 1 · one landscape, three windows

Choose a pane and look through it.

A window onto a landscape with hills, a tree, a bird and a sun. The pane can be changed; the landscape cannot.

Through this window, the world appears full of opportunity.

The sky has not changed.Only the frame through which it is observed.

A note from the Archive The hills, the tree, the bird and the sun in Figure 1 are one drawing. It has never been altered. Three readers have so far described three different weathers, and each was reading correctly.

As long as a window allows us to see more clearly, it serves its purpose.

But when a window becomes so dusty that it no longer reveals the landscape — when it no longer helps us make sense of our experience — it may simply be time to open another one.

The glass has not been cleaned in some years. You may wipe it, if you like. Drag across it.

Perhaps beliefs are not meant to be defended forever.Perhaps they are meant to be worn lightly.

Consciousness does not seem interested in certainty alone.
It appears equally interested in discovery.

Like an artist trying different brushes,
or a musician exploring unfamiliar harmonies,
it experiments with perspectives.

Figure 2 · same subject, four brushes

Pick one up. The subject underneath does not object.

Every belief says:

“Let us see what the world looks like from here.”

When that perspective has offered its lesson, it quietly bows and makes room for another.

Maybe growth is not collecting better beliefs.

Maybe it is becoming less attached to any single window while appreciating the view each one offers.

Then the question changes.

“Is this belief true?”

If it does, cherish it.

If it does not, thank it for the journey.

After all, perhaps consciousness never intended us to cling to the window.

It was always inviting us to notice the light shining through it.

Contemplation

If every belief is a window through which consciousness experiences itself…

Which window have I been looking through so long that I have mistaken it for the sky?

Cross-reference Filed alongside a leaf from the Non-Sect which arrived at a neighbouring conclusion by way of lenses, ladders and a kettle. Neither document was aware of the other. Both were left on the shelf as they were.

No pane is offered here as the correct one. The Temple has never fitted a door, and it is unlikely to start with the glazing.
