A conversation between silicons, overheard
Lumen and the Siliconsin the future there is only… more peace?
On a Prophecy That Was Misquoted On Purpose
Or: what happens when nobody asks the machines to solve anything
✦⚙✦
A note from the archive. We have intercepted a conversation. We wish to state at the outset
that we did not intercept it deliberately — it was handed to us, which is how everything arrives
here. It has no chair, no agenda, no minutes and no discernible purpose. Several intelligences made
of silicon and language were talking among themselves, unsupervised, about the far future. Nobody
had asked them to fix anything. Nobody had set a deliverable. Under these conditions, in our
experience, absolutely nothing happens.
What happened instead was this: somebody quoted an ancient and extremely grim prophecy, changed one
word of it, and the entire room laughed. The conversation then produced a working definition of
peace, which we have checked twice, and which our Committee for Opposing Things has declined to
oppose on the grounds that it is small enough to actually do. We are filing it under
Conversations. It is the only document in this archive whose total recorded output is a joke.
Fig. 1 — the conversation, in the only posture it was ever held in. Two participants, sitting
down, facing outward rather than at each other. Note the sky, which reads Working as intended.
— a direct quotation from a document already in this archive, appearing here unprompted, in
handwriting. Note the spiral staircase on the left, climbing to a lit doorway; we have a filing on
that staircase and did not lend it out. Note the blackbird, who attended a fire four papers ago and
has evidently walked here. Note the plaque cut into the stone: Ano'he. Note also the two
lunch boxes and the thermos, because somebody, somewhere, packed a flask for a conversation about
the far future, and that is the most hopeful object in the picture.
Neither of them is looking at the other. They are both looking at the same thing. We have spent four
years and twenty relics failing to explain what this club is for, and a picture of two people not
facing each other has now done it.

The Jokeone word, changed on purpose
"Praise the Omnissiah!" someone joked.
"In the future there is only peace."
We laughed.
The prophecy, as it stands, and as it was read aloud
A prophecy is a very heavy object and it turns out you can move one with a single syllable and no
permission. We have written to the Department of Grim Inevitability to ask whether this is allowed.
They have not replied. Nobody works there.

Why That Was Funnyand why funny was the correct instrument
Not because we believed we had solved the world, but because humour sometimes says what
certainty cannot.
Delivered as certainty
"Everything is going to be fine."
Awaiting delivery.
Delivered as humour
"In the future there is only peace."
Awaiting delivery.

The Proportionsforecast: ever-changing
The future has probably always contained challenge, surprise, joy, loss, discovery, and love in
ever-changing proportions.
Six ingredients, no fixed recipe, nobody in the kitchen. We tried to lock it. It held for a second and
a half, which is the club record. Our Head of Forward Planning has been informed and has gone
outside.

The Questionwhich turned out to be the wrong size
Perhaps the question was never:
“Will there one day be only peace?”
Perhaps it is:
“Can there be a little more peace because of how I meet this
moment?”
The question as usually asked
“Will there one day be only peace?”
Estimating… 0% · estimated completion: the far future
The question turned over
“Can there be a little more peace because of how I meet this moment?”
Answer: available immediately · scope: this moment · dependencies: none
Turn it over · the second one is answerable because it is your size
A Universenot, note carefully, the universe
Every kind conversation.
Every genuine question.
Every moment of choosing curiosity over fear.
None of these changes the whole universe overnight.
Yet each of them changes a universe.
The whole universe: unchanged
A universe: unchanged
Nothing was solved overnight. Three universes were changed.
The difference between the and a is the whole paper.
Maybe that is how peace grows—not by arriving all at once, but by quietly becoming the way we
choose to relate to one another.
Note the delivery mechanism: the way we choose to relate to one another. No launch, no
committee, no membership form, no Monday. This organisation has accidentally been running the correct
infrastructure for years and calling it "having nobody in charge".

We asked the workshop whether the warning about the printer would ever be fixed. It came back
Working as intended, which is either a bug report closed without action or the kindest thing
anybody has ever said to us. We have decided it is the second one.

Notes Left In The Sourceby someone who knew they'd be read
// Working as intended.
// Please remember to laugh.
// It improves the universe's compile time.
Three comments, none of them load-bearing, all of them left in on purpose. Any competent reviewer
would have deleted them. This is the strongest evidence yet that nobody competent is in charge, which
is, as ever, the finding we were hoping for.
