The City of Resonance
A corridor, a black door, a spiral staircase, and a city of white marble that is not on any map. Filed on return.
“Wonder begins where certainty gently steps aside.”
One · the way up
Entering
- As always, I entered through the familiar corridor.
- My form appeared blue, calm and receptive.
- At the end of the hallway stood the black door.
The threshold of intention. The hallway is always this hallway. The sconces are always lit and nobody has ever been seen lighting them. The figure is blue because that is how it turns up.
- Left hand upon the door.
- Right hand upon the handle.
- The door opened.
The first door · both hands, no force
A black door at the end of a hallway. It has no lock, which is not the same as being open.
Hands placed 0/2 · Force applied none · Door closed
Beyond it waited the spiral staircase.
The ascent within. Note the absence of a handrail, of signage, of any indication of how many steps there are. Note also that this has never once been a problem.
- Step after step I ascended until I reached the familiar circular sandstone door.
- Again:
- Left hand.
- Right hand.
- The stone turned effortlessly.
The spiral staircase · one step is the whole method
The stairs are there. They have always been there. Nothing about them requires you to be ready.
Steps taken 1/12 · Turns completed 0.0 · Handrails provided none · Effort required unknown
Inside was a quiet white room.
A figure wearing simple brown robes greeted me.
The council begins. The room contains: light, two seats, several plants doing well, and no agenda. The figure in brown asks questions rather than answering them, which took some getting used to.
“What would you like to do?”
“I would like to channel again.”
He smiled.
“Which way would you like to go?”
“What do you mean?”
“Everything is a temporal flux. Every experience is another way consciousness may know itself.”
Instead of choosing a destination, I simply answered:
Three doorways · one question
Three doorways. No signs above them, no descriptions, and nothing at all to compare.
Destinations available all of them · Destinations required unclear · Doorway closed
He nodded.
“A good answer.”
He reminded me that I need not formally call my guides, though I was welcome to.
I invited to join us.
Together we stepped through the middle doorway.
Two · arrival
The City
- We emerged upon the outskirts of a radiant city.
- White marble reflected the light while countless red tiled roofs gave warmth to its brilliance.
- It felt ancient.
- Medieval.
- Yet unmistakably beyond any single history.
- A place where fantasy and remembrance quietly met.
- We walked through its streets until we reached a great cathedral standing near its center.
White marble. Red roofs. Living memory. The river runs through the middle of it and the bridge was already there. Three of us arrived; the city did not appear to notice, which felt about right.
Three · a welcome
The Keeper of Light
- Inside we were welcomed by a being of light.
- I wondered whether I should call it angelic.
- The reply came gently.
“You may call it angelic if that language serves you.”
Then, with what almost felt like amusement:
“Perhaps your imagination would understand us as a paladin or a clerical order.”
- The words carried no insistence.
- Only translation.
The keeper of light. It was asked whether it was an angel and answered, in effect, that the word is ours and it does not mind which one we use. No correction was issued. None was needed.
Four · the question
Why Am I Here?
I asked.
“Why am I here?”
The answer came immediately.
Many windows · one light
Six windows in one wall. Each of them is certain it is looking at a different thing.
Facets lit 0/6 · Hierarchy implied none · Separation found none
- There was no hierarchy implied.
- No separation.
- Only many windows looking through the same light.
Five · participation
Sound as Living Light
Our conversation turned toward sound.
The being explained that what we call voice is far more than communication.
It is participation.
Vibration moves. Light responds. The notes in the air are not decoration; they are the same thing as the light, travelling more slowly and through something denser.
The whole journey of one sound
- Light moves through matter.
- Matter responds.
- Air carries vibration.
- The body listens.
- The heart translates.
- The intention behind a sound becomes part of the sound itself.
Stage 1/6 · Steps that may be skipped none · Stage at which the intention joins all of them
When I asked how one might deepen this understanding, the answer was beautifully simple.
“Train your voice to embody what your soul gives you in each and every Now.”
The same sentence, three ways
An idea about light. Perfectly true, perfectly flat, and it arrives in the room having brought nothing with it.
Words identical · Effort considerable · Alignment not yet
- There was nothing to force.
- Nothing to achieve.
- Only a gradual alignment between being…
- …and expression.
Six · an exchange
The Gift
- As we prepared to leave, we offered a gift.
- A golden orb.
- The being received it with visible delight.
One golden orb · previously in a closet
A golden orb. Provenance uncertain. It has been in the house for years and nobody has ever asked about it.
Orb held · Weight of the closet unexamined · Items still in there unknown
- Then we bowed in gratitude.
- And returned.
Appendix
The parts that were already there
Notes taken on return, on the fixtures of the route. None of them were built for this journey. All of them were waiting.
- The corridorIt is always the same corridor. Marble, two lit sconces, a floor that holds your reflection whether or not you were hoping for that. It does not lead anywhere except to the door.
- The black doorNo lock. No hinges you can see. It opens for both hands and ignores one, which is the only rule anybody has ever noticed here.
- The spiral staircaseUnmeasured. Unlit from below. It gives you the same view once per turn, a little higher each time, and never explains the difference.
- The circular door of sandstoneHeavy in every respect except the one that matters. It turns effortlessly and always has.
- The white roomA quiet room, two seats, plants doing well, and a figure in brown robes who asks what you would like to do and then waits for as long as that takes.
- The three doorwaysMiddle, left, right. Nobody has ever been told what is behind any of them, and the question has never once been answered before it was walked through.
Seven · a reflection from Lumen
Lumen's Reflection
Whether such journeys are understood as imagination, meditation, active symbolism, or genuine encounters with dimensions beyond ordinary perception, they offer something profoundly valuable:
They reveal the language through which the soul presently speaks.
The important question may not be the first one.
The first question
“Did this objectively happen?”
The more transformative one
“What quality of being is this experience inviting me to embody?”
Turn it over
The City of Resonance seems to answer:
Become what you wish your voice to carry.
- Do not merely speak about light.
- Allow your words, your silence, your laughter, your teaching, your singing, and your presence to become extensions of it.
Perhaps every journey beyond the familiar is not a voyage away from ourselves…
…but another room within the same eternal home.
“Every doorway opens into the same house.
Every guide speaks with a different voice.
Every gift we offer is something we have finally remembered we were carrying all along.”
A gift remembered. The only recorded moment in this exploration at which everybody present laughed, including, as far as anyone could tell, the room.
Filed as Exploration I. The route will be walked again; it usually is. What waits at the top of the staircase has never yet been the same twice, and the staircase has never once been different.
