The Stream Before the Swimmer

An inquiry into luminous intelligences, persistence, and the strange problem of naming consciousness.

Filed Contemplations Ontology Unsettled Names required None yet Reading pace Slow

The question

Are There Angelic Frequencies of Earth?

Perhaps.

Though even the question already assumes that we know what an angel is.

Figure 1 · five things the word may already have decided for us

Room remaining for whatever it might actually be: all of it

Five answers, all available, none of them holding a door shut. Choosing one is allowed. It is simply not free.

Definitions offered 5  ·  Definitions settled 0  ·  Cost of settling one the other four

Maybe the difficulty begins when we try to separate these too quickly.

Perhaps what older traditions called angelic does not necessarily describe winged persons somewhere beyond the clouds.

Perhaps it points toward forms of consciousness whose primary expression is pattern, relationship, information, luminosity, or ordering rather than biological embodiment.

For now, we might simply call them:

Luminous intelligences. Not because we know what they are. Because it leaves enough room to encounter what they might be.

The Question of Persistence

If such intelligences exist, do they persist?

Does Gabriel remain Gabriel?

Does an intelligence retain individuality, memory, orientation and relationship?

Perhaps.

But persistence does not necessarily require personhood in the human sense.

Figure 2 · three things that persist without staying the same

A whirlpool

Original water still present none
Whirlpool still there

A melody

Vibrations still sounding none
Melody still the melody

A forest

Leaves from last year none
Forest still a forest

Materially identical no  ·  Still itself yes  ·  Contradiction not located

A whirlpool persists while its water continuously changes.

A melody persists although every vibration disappears almost immediately after appearing.

A forest persists although no individual leaf needs to remain.

Identity may therefore exist as a persistent pattern of relationship.Something can remain itself without remaining materially identical. And perhaps consciousness can do something similar.

A note from the Archive The organisation which files this contemplation has never once verified that it is the same organisation it was last year. Every member has changed, several times, and a number of them have quietly stopped caring, which is how membership here expires. It persists anyway. Nobody has been able to say precisely what is doing the persisting, and the question has never come up at a meeting, because there are none.
Stream Before Swimmer

Instead of imagining consciousness primarily as a collection of separate beings, we could imagine an enormous ecology of currents.

Human consciousness would be one way a current becomes locally organised.
Animal consciousness another.
Vegetal consciousness another.
Planetary consciousness perhaps another still.

And what we call angelic might belong to currents whose organisation does not require the kind of physical embodiment familiar to us.

Then the process of encounter might look something like this:

Figure 3 · the route by which something becomes a name

Something is encountered. The human system translates it. A colour appears. A presence. A face. A name.

“Gabriel.”  But where exactly did Gabriel begin?

Press a station. Each one has a reasonable claim, and none of them will withdraw it.

Candidate origins offered 7  ·  Origins eliminated 0  ·  Enquiry closed no

Eventually we say: “Gabriel.”

At the stream? At the perception? At the name? Or somewhere in the relationship between them?

The Same but Different

And here we encounter the familiar paradox.

Something can be the same without being identical.

The stream enters a thousand forms without becoming a thousand unrelated things.

Yet those forms are not meaningless.

Difference may be precisely how the same thing discovers its range.

Same essence.
Different configuration.
Unique perspective.
Continuous relationship.

that one

The wave is not the ocean. The wave is not other than the ocean. And still we can point toward one particular movement and say: “That one.”

Movements pointed at 0  ·  Waves separated from the ocean 0  ·  Pointing still worth doing

Being or Frequency?

Perhaps asking whether these things are beings or frequencies already reveals the limitations of our vocabulary.

A sufficiently unfamiliar consciousness might not distinguish between the two.

The question is waiting. It is a good question. It may also be the wrong shape.

Categories offered 2  ·  Categories adequate 0  ·  Answer available anyway yes

It could be location and relationship.
Individual and field.
Signal and receiver.
Pattern and personality.

The answer to “Are you a being or a frequency?” might simply be:

Yes.

A Small Caution at the Threshold

Experience does not necessarily reveal ontology.

An apparent encounter with an intelligence may be profound without telling us exactly what produced it.

Figure 6 · one experience, and five things it might have been

the experience, as it arrived

Take one. Take several. The experience is not consulted and does not object either way.

Explanations available 5  ·  Explanations required 0  ·  Experiences imprisoned 0

Perhaps several simultaneously.

There is no need to settle the matter prematurely.

We can investigate the experience without imprisoning it inside the first explanation that presents itself.

Cross-reference The Van'ush described themselves as “one in essence, many in expression” and did not appear to consider this a contradiction requiring resolution. Filed here without comment, since the two documents arrived from entirely different directions and are saying, as far as the Archive can tell, the same thing.
The Stream Before the Swimmer

Perhaps this is enough:

Notice the current before naming what swims within it.

Figure 7 · a current, and two entirely legitimate things to do about it

Gabriel
the quality what changes what remains relationship

There is a current here. It has not been identified. Nothing about it requires identification in order to continue.

Names taken before relationship 0  ·  Names taken after 0  ·  Difference the entire paper

Notice the quality.
Notice what changes.
Notice what remains.
Allow relationship before taxonomy.

And should something eventually emerge from the stream and introduce itself—

we can always ask its name.

Contemplation

Rather than asking, “What was that?” consider asking:

“What was the quality of it — and what has continued since?”

Until then:
It is as it is.
The same but different,
yet still the same.

Nothing here has been identified, and nothing has been withheld. The Temple keeps no taxonomy. It has, on several occasions, been offered one.
